I found this at an estate sale. This tablecloth jumped right off the shelf as being very special and a keepsake. It is made from thicker medium weight linen, so the weight, softness and drape are the first thing we noticed. It feels good to hold. Then, the embroidery of daisies and vines jumps out -- it is beautifully consistent, and it is hand done, as you can see the workmanship, knotting, and general process of stitching on the back. The color is cream. Overall, this tablecloth, for all it's embellishments still manages to be neutral, and so a great foundation for dishes, flowers or whatever else you want to put on it. While it is vintage, is remains modern due to the simplicity of the design, lovely linen and color. Will accommodate a 48" round table perfectly.

Modernplum's use of linen, both as fabrics and goods is rooted in a philosophy of responsibility. We believe that as an importer and manufacturer, our main responsibility is the protection of human and nature's resources. This is a complicated endeavor, and there are many ways to approach these conservation efforts. Here is what we do and why we do it:

  • Linen is made from the flax plant, which naturally creates a durable fabric that lasts longer, is biodegradable, and renewable.
  • Flax is farm grown. The flax plant is naturally insect repellent so it requires less fertilizer and water to grow than other natural fabrics (including cotton).
  • Made to Order manufacturing allows us to only sew when goods are sold. This cuts down on unsold inventory and the use of materials and labor that is not necessary.
  • Zero waste manufacturing is our internal procedure of saving and reusing all our fabric scraps, saving them from the land fill. Most of our scraps are used for swatches.
  • Local sewing in Chicago allows us to enhance the local economy and produce simply, where we know our sewers and can monitor quality and customizations more effectively.

This product is made from 100% Linen which we import, primarily from the Czech Republic and Korea.

To care for our linen items, machine wash and dry or spot clean. Iron for a formal look, or linen can be washed and used without ironing for a casual organic look. It is entirely personal preference.
